A Christmas Surprise Page 6

“Mrs. Peters knows? I can’t believe you told her before you told me!” Tommy exclaimed.

“I didn’t. She guessed. Apparently I kept rubbing my stomach or something and she put the two together. That’s why she gave the hint about naming the baby after Mr. Peters. I wanted to shoot her when she said that, but she made me realize a lot of what I had been afraid of could be worked out. We’ll have to call them tomorrow, because I want to tell her she was right.”

  “Right about what?”

“About the way you were going to react. She said you’d be shocked and then you would jump and shout. She also let me in on another little secret.”

  “There’s more?”

“Well, only if you want to make it with a pregnant lady.”

“Man, I forgot about that. Last night, we . . . Are you sure it’s okay? I don’t want to hurt the baby or anything.”

“It’s perfectly safe, sweetheart. The only thing the baby knows is that my heart is pumping faster and that simply means he gets more to eat.”

“No wonder pregnant women get the munchies; it’s ingrained in them before birth.”

“You’re really sick, you know that? But I love you very much and I can’t wait to start our new family. We’ll have to call my parents in the morning and let them know. I hope my brother takes this well. It may be too much too soon for him. I don’t want to rub any salt in his wounds, but I’m not going to pretend I’m not excited about the baby either.”

“I think Jamie will be happy for you and for us. He might worry about losing you, too, but we’ll help him work through that. Woman, I love you more than anything else. Now, give your husband a proper Christmas Eve kiss. We should get to bed early; you’re going to need your rest.”

“What? I’ve been doing just fine lately, so don’t you start fussing over me now. I know I have precious cargo and I’m going to take very good care of him. But going to bed with my handsome husband does sound absolutely wonderful to me. Besides, Santa will be coming tonight. He won’t leave the presents if we’re up and wandering around,” she teased. “So, let’s turn off the lights and get an early start. This will probably be the last year we can go to bed on Christmas Eve at a decent hour. From now on, we’ll be up half the night wrapping presents and putting together boxes of toys.”

“Sounds good to me. If you’re sure it’s okay, I would dearly love to make sweet love to my wife,” Tommy whispered as he lowered his head to place a gentle kiss upon her mouth.

After their lips parted, she said, “I’m positive it’s okay. I desperately need to feel your arms around me and your lips on mine. Bet I can beat you there, though.” Betsy laughed as she ran out of the den and flung herself across the large bed. “Come to me, my loving husband, and show me how happy you are.”

“I have a lot of things to show you tonight,” he huskily responded as he eased himself next to her and removed her shirt and bra, playfully tossing each item into the air. “There is one thing which I’ve noticed about you lately; this child will have plenty of nourishment. If your breasts continue to grow at this rate, we might be fighting over them.”

As Betsy laughed, she teased, “You’ll have to learn to share, Tommy, but I promise you’ll have your turn.”

Tommy groaned in rising desire as he kissed her lips and her neck and began lavishing attention to her larger breasts with their taut nipples. As Betsy moaned her delight and encouragement, he slipped off her jeans and underwear, then stood to remove his own with haste. He positioned himself beside her and looked deeply into her eyes before he indulged himself in heady and stimulating foreplay.

After they were aroused to a great height, he murmured in her ear. “I love you, Mrs. Betsy Reed. Forever you’ll be mine.” He laid claim to her body and her mind as he repeatedly entered her until she called out his name upon her release. Tommy quickly followed his wife over the summit, as he had strained himself to the limit to keep from peaking before her during this glorious and fulfilling moment.

As she lay cuddled in his embrace, her mind at peace and her body aglow with contentment, Betsy said, “I love you, too, Mr. Tommy Reed. Forever I’ll belong to you.”

  “Merry Christmas, Bets,” he murmured.

“Merry Christmas, sweetheart. Merry Christmas, little one,” she added as she stroked her stomach, wondering if she carried a boy or a girl, then deciding it didn’t make any difference.

Tommy fell asleep that night with his hand resting on her abdomen and hers lying atop his and thinking he had just received the best Christmas surprise ever.
